We're Hiring a Gallery Attendant through the Canada Summer Jobs program

We’re hiring a Gallery Attendant for 8 weeks (32 hrs per week at $20 an hour. ) The position is open to those 30 and younger.

Details on the position:

The Gallery Attendant will assist in day-to-day administrative duties in support of Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective, Gallery Director, and any artists or stakeholders enacting a project or exhibition as part of the gallery’s programming.

The successful candidate will have experience and a passion working within Indigenous Contemporary Art within diverse communities with varying life experiences. They will maintain Ociciwan’s core values and will be willing to work with the team to ensure the safety and positive experience of all community members. Ociciwan is looking for someone who is values and community driven, who is open and positive while working in collaborative ways with open communication.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Opening and closing the gallery space as per gallery procedures

  • Greeting visitors and offering programming information

  • Answering questions from visitors in person, by telephone, and by email

  • Receiving and forwarding calls to gallery staff, or taking messages outside of office hours

  • Tracking attendance statistics

  • Monitoring the exhibition spaces and artwork, and recording any findings as necessary

  • Communicating any security issues, as well as, any artwork, equipment, or exhibition space issues to the Director

  • Tracking and receiving payments from sales and donations

  • Maintaining cleanliness of lobby and other public areas as required (sweeping, keeping front desk organized, replenishing exhibition cards, etc.)

  • Working at occasional special events: opening receptions, public programs, etc.

  • Other duties as required

Skills, Abilities and Experience Required:

  • Administrative skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, when required

  • Experience with art gallery or public art production and management

  • Ability to work under little supervision and take initiative to support the director and core-members

  • Culture workers of identified Indigenous ancestry are encouraged to apply

Term of Contract:

  • 8-week contact

  • Contract wages are a total non-negotiable. It is expected that the coordinator will work 32 hours per week at a rate of $20/hour

  • Some evening and weekend work will be required, dependent on the exhibition programming and events.

  • Start Date: June 1, 2022
