WALTER SCOTT
Scene Report, with Wendy - Nuit Blanche Edmonton
Saturday, September 26, 7 pm until Sunday, September 27, 4 pm, 2015
Stanley A. Milner Library, 7 Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton, AB
As part of Nuit Blanche Edmonton’s* inaugural exhibition, Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective presents a new work by internationally renowned artist Walter Scott. Scott’s dual projection installation at the Stanley Milner Library features his ongoing Wendy Comic Series that depicts the experiences of Wendy, the comic’s protagonist.Wendy is a trendy, twenty-something living in an urban centre who aspires to global success and art stardom but whose dreams are perpetually derailed by the pitfalls of that world, including parties, boys and alcohol.
Entitled Scene Report, With Wendy, Scott’s installation makes visible the hidden, often underrepresented private lives of visual artists for Edmontonians. Using the accessible medium of comics and public space, Scott blurs the lines between ideas of public and private, artist and viewer. We see beyond an artist’s "finished work" into the narrative and private lives of the artist as a work in progress itself. The graphic characterization of Wendy serves as a vehicle from which Scott can examine the constructs found within the ‘art scene’. Scene Report, With Wendy investigates the construction of identity, superficiality and the intersections of complex relationships centered within the art community - in the midst of an elite structure of artist, curators, critics and the general public.
*Nuit Blanche Edmonton is a free, contemporary art event that will transform downtown for one night only on September 26, 2015 from 7 pm until 4 am. To find out more about Nuit Blanche and their programming, click here for more details about the exciting works being presented!
