Job Description:
Ociciwan is seeking a dedicated individual to work as the interim director coordinating the daily operations and running exhibitions alongside the core members, program coordinator and other contract employees at Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre.
The Interim Director is responsible for overseeing the artistic integrity of curated exhibitions and special projects/events and the day to day operations of the centre. This includes coordinating the duties of the program coordinator and other contract staff as well as reporting to the core collective. This position is geared towards 13 months of employment.
The successful candidate will have experience and a passion working within Indigenous Contemporary Art within diverse communities with varying life experiences. They will maintain Ociciwan’s core values and will be willing to work with the team to ensure the safety and positive experience of all community members. Ociciwan is looking for someone who is values and community driven, who is open and positive while working in collaborative ways with open communication.
Interim Director Duties
Assist in the development of a collective run centre
Working together with an artist run centre mentor
Meeting with stakeholders on behalf of Ociciwan
Assisting the project coordinator for 2022/2023/2024 programming and exhibitions in collaboration with Ociciwan core members
Maintain relationships developed as Interim Director for Ociciwan
Demonstrate leadership, vision and a responsible and balanced work ethic, with all Ociciwan stakeholders, core members, artists, elders and community members.
Management and Administrative Duties
Lead in writing grants and final reports in collaboration with Ociciwan core members and delegate as required
Working with project coordinators and other Ociciwan contract staff
Managing budgets and issuing funds to accomplish the project vision and mandate of Ociciwan, in a fiscally responsible way with regular reports to Core members
Seeking grants and additional funds, and reporting on existing funding relationships to funders on behalf of Ociciwan.
Work with Ociciwan approved bookkeeper to assist in the managing budgets and issuing payments and funding.
Project Duties
check-ins with project lead for each project to outline which following duties will need to be completed for the project.
Supervising and contributing or reviewing external and Internal Communication of projects (Social Media, Press releases, Media outreach, etc)
Supervise and conduct coordination regarding artwork requirements (including but not limited to the areas of production, fabrication, and volunteer requirements)
Work with Ociciwan and project partners to organize, if necessary, an Opening Reception, and other affiliated events associated with each project (such as workshops, panel events, presentations, artist talks, etcetera)
Supervise and conduct coordination regarding possible catalogue or print related material to each project
Coordinate exhibition and event related copy and images with program coordinator.
Term of Contract
This is a full-time position for 13 months with health benefits, after a 3-month probationary period.
Some evening and weekend work will be required, dependent on the exhibition programming and events.
Salary: $48,000 - $54,000 per year (based on experience)
Period of Employment: Mid-August 2022 till Mid-September 2023

Ociciwan supports the work of Indigenous contemporary artists and designers, and engages in contemporary critical dialogue through exhibitions and community gatherings. We value artistic collaboration and foster the awareness of Indigenous contemporary art practices.
We present 4 projects a year within the Art Centre and collaborate and contribute to a broad range of art activities within the local and national arts community.
Ociciwan is an inanimate Plains Cree noun relating to current or river, translated to mean the current comes from there. The name references the North Saskatchewan River that has brought many people over time to the region. It conveys an energy of engagement with Indigenous contemporary culture, linking present with the past and the future.
